Auto insurance requirements vary by state. In California, to drive you must carry:
Collision insurance coverage pays for damage caused to your vehicle in an automobile accident, whether or not you’re at fault.
If another driver is found to be at fault, then likely, their insurance coverage will pay for the damage, including the deductible.
If another driver is found to be at fault, AND that other driver does not have insurance at the time of the accident, then a provision in California Insurance Law allows for you to have a coverage that will pay the deductible, in addition to the repair of your vehicle. This provision is called Collision Damage Waiver and is available for an extra cost on your policy when you elect to have Collision Coverage.
Standard collision coverage will pay for any repairs up to the fair market value of your car. Collision coverage comes with an insurance deductible. It’s the amount of money you pay toward repairs before your collision insurance kicks in. The higher the deductible you’re willing to pay, the less the collision coverage component will cost.
Comprehensive coverage also covers the car, but for events ‘other than collision’. Vandalism, flood, hurricane, theft, windshield damage and fire are all events usually covered by comprehensive automobile insurance. Like collision, comprehensive will pay up to the fair market value of your car (less your insurance deductible.) And although it’s not legally required by any state, you will probably need it if your car is financed.
Another optional coverage that will pay for you, or other occupants in the vehicle, who are harmed in an auto accident, regardless of fault, and need medical care because of that incident.
This optional coverage can either directly pay for, or give you reimbursement, for the expense of renting a temporary replacement vehicle if your own car cannot be used because of a covered loss.
